 In Her Own Words

I am Sierra Bender, a best-selling author who travels around the world as a motivational speaker to fight violence against women. Sounds exciting, but what I am most proud of is the success of healing myself. I am a statistic of sexual abuse and domestic violence.

Women and girls are often asked by friends, family and even the law, why did you not leave him?  How come you did not tell anyone? A young girl does not grow up wanting to be beaten, abused or to sell her soul. Domestic violence, sexual abuse, human trafficking and prostitution are all results of the abuse of power.

As a young girl you do not know what sexual abuse or domestic violence is. However, when you encounter it you do know and feel something is wrong to the core of your being. It's a violation creating a loss of trust of those around you, even of the law.

I would ask myself, "who do I go to with this horrible secret,” “who would believe me,” and “would I be harmed even more?" These are only some of the questions and fears that ran through my mind and heart.  “In the end, who would protect me if no one heard my screams, saw my pain or even noticed my spirit was crushed?” I only knew at the time it was safer to remain silent and hope the pain would go away. My only concern was to survive. But even after surviving it did not end. The self- inflicting pain to numb out the original pain continued even after the abuse stopped. It was a vicious cycle.

This is an injustice to females around the world.

Sexual abuse and domestic violence does not define you. Even if it is something that has happened to you, it is not who you are at your core. Your best revenge and justice comes simply from healing. When you empower yourself, you control the present and the future. And in doing so you forgive the past, which prevents you from passing this injustice down to the next generation.

- Sierra Bender is a best-selling author and creator of the Sierra Bender Empowerment Method. She also works with the local nonprofit Heels to Heal, which gives females of all ages a voice, a place to be heard, validated and supported to heal, grow, learn, evolve and be empowered. “To be victorious and courageous, not victimized or comprised. To turn their pain into power.”  Sierra can be reached at sierrabenderinfo@gmail.com or through her website www.SierraBender.com.

 Invest in CASA

CASA is a “Blue Chip” Investment

Everybody wants a few “blue chip” stocks in their portfolio.  You know what they are and why you want them.  They’ve stood the test of time.  They’ve enhanced their value.  You know they’re well managed and provide a great service or product.  Your return on investment is pretty much guaranteed.  Well, time to put CASA in that category as we’ve been serving victims of domestic violence for nearly 37 years in Pinellas County.  We just built a brand new shelter for victims and children to meet what is unfortunately a growing need in our community.  And you already know CASA squeezes out the value of each and every dollar we receive for the benefit of those we serve every day of the year.

A few examples from our perspectus for your consideration:

If this is the kind of return you are seeking in your investment portfolio, give me a call so we can discuss how you can help CASA help others for the next 37 years.

John Biesinger is CASA’s Manager of Major Gifts. He welcomes reader comments about the article and questions about how to support CASA. John can be reached at (727) 895-4912 x105 and jbiesinger@casa-stpete.org. To donate online visit www.casa-stpete.org/donate.

Safe Home Starter Kits

Help a survivor family get started in their new home by providing a starter kit!

Many of CASA’s survivors, transitioning from shelter to their new home, have only a few of their own personal possessions to bring with them. It can be an overwhelming (and expensive!) task to purchase the most basic necessities for their home.

In an effort to eliminate this obstacle for our survivors, we would like to give each survivor/family an “on the move” pack. You can support this effort by purchasing items listed below, making a $50 donation or donating gift cards from Walmart, Targets or any of the dollar stores.

Or next time you get together with friends, create an "On the Move" pack of your own!

Please consider investing in this important giving opportunity to assist a survivor and their children on their new journey!

Suggested items to include:

Pot and frying pan
Measuring cup
Oven mitt
Plates, bowls, cups, glasses, silverware (4 piece set)
Cleaning products: laundry & dish soap, sponge, personal hygiene products
